Le Castellet, FranceApril 21, 2026 /PRNewswire/ — Today, Formula E and the FIA officially commenced the first on-track demonstration runs of the GEN4 race car for invited guests at the Circuit Paul Ricard in southern France, heralding a new era for electric motorsport. This all-new next-generation car will continue its development from this unveiling before being handed over to teams and manufacturers for competition in the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship starting in the 2026/27 season.

The GEN4 achieves a top speed over 335 km/h, accelerates from 0-100 km/h in approximately 1.8 seconds, and from 0-200 km/h in just 4.4 seconds (1.5 seconds faster than the previous generation). Its power in race mode is 50% higher than the current GEN3 Evo car. In qualifying mode, the GEN4’s average lap time will be 10 seconds faster than the GEN3 car. Attack Mode delivers a maximum power output of 600 kW, a 71% increase over the base output of the GEN3 Evo, pushing the performance limits of electric racing. Furthermore, the GEN4 is the only single-seater race car featuring permanent all-wheel drive.

The on-track demonstration vividly showcased the GEN4’s speed advantage. Its overtaking maneuvers past the GEN1, GEN2, and GEN3 predecessors highlighted the generational leap in innovation and pure performance. Set to officially compete in the 2026/27 season, the GEN4 is projected to set the fastest Formula E lap records on street circuits—at least 5 seconds per lap quicker—compared to the latest GEN3 Evo.

As the sole all-electric FIA World Championship, GEN4 represents not only the pinnacle of motorsport innovation but also a testbed for the future of mobility. It continues the series’ “race to road” philosophy, with its 600 kW charging technology and high-efficiency motor development providing crucial support for next-generation electric vehicle technology.

Beyond exceptional performance, sustainability remains a core pillar of GEN4 innovation. GEN4 will become the world’s first 100% recyclable race car, with key components containing at least 20% recycled materials. Its tires are made from 65% natural and recycled materials (including 30% certified natural rubber), and its battery contains no rare earth minerals. On a broader scale, Formula E remains the first global sports property certified to the British Standards Institution’s Pathway to Net Zero and the first motorsport series globally to achieve B Corp Certification.

Jeff Dodds, Chief Executive Officer of Formula E, said:

“GEN4 is more than just a race car; it’s a bold statement of our ambition. Witnessing it on track for the first time is a true milestone for Formula E – the performance levels we are achieving today were considered impossible for electric vehicles just five years ago. The leap in performance is evident, from speed and power to on-track presence, and the excitement was palpable for everyone present. For the upcoming 2026/27 season, this is an exhilarating moment for the championship and clearly points the way forward.”

“This is just the beginning. The task of refining and perfecting the car now passes to our manufacturers – Porsche, Jaguar, Stellantis, Nissan, Lola Cars, and Mahindra – who will push its performance to even greater extremes ahead of its competitive debut. GEN4 is not just an evolution; it’s a revolution in innovation and performance that will redefine motorsport for years to come.”

Mohammed Ben Sulayem, President of the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA), said:

“The new GEN4 electric race car marks a significant step forward for electric motorsport, setting a new global benchmark for performance, innovation, and sustainability.”

“It’s not just a very fast car; it’s a statement about the future direction of this technology. I am immensely proud that the FIA and our partners in the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship are leading this vision.”

“Collaboration has been central to the development of this car and will continue to be at the heart of the championship’s new era – an era characterized by greater performance, road relevance, and passion. We are working with some of the world’s largest automotive manufacturers, using motorsport as a laboratory to redefine what is possible.”

GEN4 also introduces enhanced safety features, including a wider cockpit for increased hand space and a power steering system to help mitigate steering load during impacts, while simultaneously raising the challenge for drivers at the highest level of motorsport. The adjustability of the driving position has also been improved, helping to level the playing field and enhance inclusivity in top-tier competition from an engineering standpoint.

Beyond the track, GEN4 further solidifies Formula E’s position as a cultural platform, merging peak performance with innovation and sustainability, while continuing to expand its influence in fashion, gaming, and music.

At the demonstration event in Le Castellet, all Formula E teams and manufacturers were present, including Porsche, Jaguar, Nissan, Mahindra, Lola Cars, and Stellantis – represented by Opel as they prepare to join the championship in 2026/27. The conclusion is clear and powerful: GEN4 is not just faster; it represents a generational leap, showcasing the immense progress electric racing has made in just twelve seasons since Formula E’s inception and pointing the way forward for the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship.

For fans, it promises a new spectacle – more intense battles, higher speeds, and more dramatic on-track action than ever before – further cementing Formula E’s place at the forefront of innovation and performance in global sports.
