Hardware Subtraction, Fusion Addition: Quectel’s Satellite-Architecture Millimeter-Wave Radar Empowers Advanced ADAS and High-Level Autonomous Driving

ShanghaiApril 27, 2026 /PRNewswire/ — During the 2026 Beijing International Automotive Exhibition, Quectel unveiled its Central Computing Satellite Architecture Millimeter-Wave Radar Complete Solution. Featuring an innovative “satellite node + central fusion” design, this solution provides a lightweight, highly integrated, and evolvable perception foundation for advanced driver assistance systems, emerging as a key technological highlight in the field of assisted driving perception at this year’s auto show.

Hardware Subtraction: Radar “Lightened,” Achieving Dual Benefits in Cost and Reliability

In advanced driver assistance systems, lightweight and efficient perception front-ends are becoming an industry consensus. Quectel’s satellite architecture radar strips away the edge computing power of traditional radar nodes, allowing them to focus on high-quality raw signal acquisition and transmission. Data is transmitted in real-time to the central domain controller via high-speed SerDes links.

This design delivers three key advantages:

1. Hardware Lightening

Radar nodes are smaller, consume less power, and offer higher reliability, significantly reducing hardware costs.

2. Centralized Computing Power

The central domain controller reuses the DSP resources of a high-performance SoC, avoiding redundant deployment of similar computing power across multiple nodes in distributed solutions.

3. Energy Optimization

Centralized power supply simplifies power management, improves energy efficiency, and reduces overall vehicle energy consumption.

Additionally, Quectel’s satellite architecture radar is based on globally leading 8-transmit, 8-receive single MMIC chip and 4-transmit, 4-receive MMIC chip solutions. With one forward-facing 4D imaging radar and four corner radars installed on the vehicle, it can build 360° stereoscopic perception coverage. Radars no longer operate independently but serve as lightweight perception front-ends, delivering high-quality raw data to the central computing platform.

Fusion Addition: From “Reporting Individually” to “Unified Puzzle”

In traditional architectures, each radar independently outputs processed target results, leading to inevitable information fragmentation. Quectel’s Central Computing Satellite Architecture Millimeter-Wave Radar, however, aggregates raw point cloud data from all five radar paths through the central domain controller. It first performs unified spatial and temporal alignment, then deeply fuses the data to generate a complete full-vehicle perception map. The improvements from data aggregation and fusion are intuitive — denser point clouds, clearer contours, and smaller blind spots. The point cloud density under this architecture is significantly enhanced compared to traditional solutions, providing a high-quality data foundation for BEV perception, occupancy networks, and end-to-end algorithms.

More importantly, this architecture supports multi-sensor fusion configurations. Radar data can synergize and complement cameras, LiDAR, and other sensors, achieving multi-scenario, multi-domain, all-weather stereoscopic surround perception. This enables access to more primitive fusion data, laying the groundwork for achieving higher functional safety goals.

Upgrade Multiplication: Naturally Compatible with Central Computing, Continuous OTA Evolution

Quectel’s satellite architecture radar aligns closely with the evolution path of vehicle central computing. It supports flexible expansion and continuous OTA upgrades — with hardware pre-installed, perception performance can evolve iteratively with algorithm updates, making the vehicle “smarter” over time.

In terms of production readiness, Quectel has fully considered compatibility with customers’ existing platforms. The current 5R engineering prototype vehicle based on the SerDes protocol has completed debugging, and the relevant signal processing algorithms meet customer self-development requirements. Quectel’s self-developed domain controller SoC API and SDK support rapid code porting, helping partners significantly shorten development cycles.

Wang Min, President of Quectel’s Automotive Business Unit, stated: “Amid the dual ‘involution’ of technology and cost in the automotive industry, Quectel, leveraging its deep industry insights, has taken the lead in launching the vehicle satellite radar architecture product and technology stack. While significantly reducing hardware costs, it raises the performance baseline of assisted driving. The relevant technology stack can be delivered as a ‘white box’ to industry partners, helping customers quickly build development capabilities and drive technological upgrades across the supply chain.”

The widespread adoption of advanced driver assistance systems requires a more efficient, reliable, and cost-effective perception architecture as support. The launch of Quectel’s satellite radar architecture further clarifies the value positioning of millimeter-wave radar in vehicle intelligence. In the future, Quectel will continue to drive technological innovation, pushing ADAS from “usable” to “great to use.”
