Strong University-Enterprise Collaboration, Leading Global Collagen Innovation

Against the backdrop of strong support from the national “15th Five-Year Plan” for biomaterials and comprehensive health development, as well as the deep integration of industry, academia, and research, collagen, as a core strategic material for tissue repair, high-end medical devices, and regenerative medicine, is meeting the growing demand for anti-aging among contemporary consumers and ushering in a hundred-billion-level development opportunity. Although China has a well-established regulatory system and leads in safety standards, possesses the world’s most complete collagen industry chain, and ranks among the top globally in patents, clinical applications, and market scale, there are still shortcomings in areas such as fundamental theoretical research, core process breakthroughs, and international standard setting. Deep collaboration between industry, academia, and research is urgently needed to break through these bottlenecks.

Fudan University boasts strong disciplinary foundations in life sciences, polymer materials, phenomics, artificial intelligence, and clinical medicine. Fibropro Bio, rooted in the field of active collagen for over two decades, was the first company in China to successfully register bovine collagen as a Class III medical device. This “strong alliance” transforms the requirements of the “Four Orientations” — facing the frontiers of world science and technology, facing the main battlefield of the economy, facing the major needs of the country, and facing the life and health of the people — from slogans into actions and from blueprints into reality.

Peng Huisheng, Member of the Standing Committee of the Fudan University Party Committee, Assistant to the President, and Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, stated that the current new round of technological revolution and industrial transformation is deeply intertwined. To achieve high-level technological self-reliance and self-strengthening, the “last mile” between the innovation chain and the industrial chain must be bridged. This collaboration closely aligns with the “Four Orientations” research direction, leveraging Fudan’s disciplinary strengths in life sciences and biomedical engineering, along with Fibropro Bio’s industrialization advantages. It is committed to overcoming the “bottleneck” challenges in the field of active bovine collagen, creating three highlands of original innovation, industry-education integration, and health service, and promoting the transition of research results from the “bookshelf” to the “market shelf,” contributing the synergy of industry, academia, and research to the cause of people’s life and health.

Guo Yi, Secretary of the College of Biomedical Engineering and Technology Innovation at Fudan University, stated that the College of Biomedical Engineering and Technology Innovation at Fudan University and Fibropro Bio, which has been deeply involved in the collagen field for over twenty years, share aligned concepts and missions. They will integrate elite interdisciplinary forces, openly share high-end research platforms, deepen the industry-education integration talent cultivation model, focus on key technological breakthroughs in bovine collagen, and strive to build a benchmark platform for the integration of industry, academia, research, and application, helping to drive the high-quality development of China’s collagen industry.

Adhering to National Quality Collagen, Empowering Industrial Upgrades Across the Entire Chain

As a leading enterprise deeply involved in active collagen for over 20 years, Fibropro Bio has always adhered to “National Quality Collagen” as its core, building a full-chain quality control system from EU-standard medical-grade cattle farm construction, raw material optimization, and process innovation to product development and clinical validation. Based on clinical anti-aging and skin texture repair needs, Fibropro Bio has participated in formulating expert consensus and group standards for the periorbital and perioral areas, aiming to lead the revival wave of Chinese collagen with safe and efficient collagen solutions. At the same time, Fibropro Bio has been actively promoting the transformation of industry, academia, and research. It has collaborated with universities such as Sichuan University, Shaanxi University of Science and Technology, and Jilin University, as well as clinical experts, to open up the entire chain of “basic research – clinical application – industrial transformation,” formulate industry standards, and broaden collagen application scenarios. This collaboration with Fudan University to establish the first university-enterprise joint laboratory for innovative bovine collagen materials is a crucial step in Fibropro Bio’s strategy to lead the high-quality development of Chinese collagen and build an innovative ecosystem for the “research, production, and application” of active collagen.

Wu Jiefu, Director and Co-Chairman of the Executive Committee of Fibropro Bio, stated: “This university-enterprise collaboration is a perfect combination of Fudan’s strong research capabilities and Fibropro Bio’s industrial transformation strengths. In the future, together with Fudan University, we will build a global innovation and R&D hub for the collagen field, a platform for result transformation, and a source for exporting world standards. We will fully leverage Fibropro Bio’s full-chain advantages in the industrial sector to rapidly transform top-tier laboratory research results into clinically usable and market-recognized products, making Chinese collagen technology a global industry benchmark and truly realizing the vision of ‘The world looks to China for collagen, and Chinese collagen leads the world.'”

Additionally, Professor Liu Wei from the Air Force Medical Center and Professor Wang Jiucun from the School of Life Sciences at Fudan University were appointed as expert advisors for the Joint Laboratory during the event. They will provide professional guidance and intellectual support for the laboratory’s academic development, technology assessment, and innovation advancement in the future, assisting the Joint Laboratory in overcoming key technologies in the collagen field and leading high-quality industry development.

Dr. Ma Yanyun, a young researcher at the College of Biomedical Engineering and Technology Innovation at Fudan University and Director of the Joint Laboratory, along with Dr. Li Hongqiang, R&D Director of Fibropro Bio and Deputy Director of the Joint Laboratory, introduced to the attending leaders and experts the future goals and directions of the Joint Laboratory in technological research, talent cultivation, and scientific transformation in the field of active collagen.
