ShenzhenMay 19, 2026 /PRNewswire/ — Every year, May 19 marks World IBD Day, aimed at raising public awareness and attention to Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD). Recently, the “Quality-Driven, Co-Creating the Future” 2026 Third High-Quality Development Conference on Digestive Health was held in Shenzhen, hosted by the China Health Promotion Foundation and supported by Takeda China. The conference brought together authoritative experts and scholars in the field of gastroenterology from both domestic and international backgrounds, as well as industry representatives, to engage in in-depth discussions on core topics such as upgrading the quality control and evaluation system for IBD diagnosis and treatment, standardized treatment with biologics, and the exploration and application of innovative technologies. The aim was to drive the digestive disease prevention and treatment system towards homogenization, precision, and digital intelligence, outlining a new blueprint for the specialized construction of Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) under the “Healthy China 2030” strategy.
Focusing on Scientific Management: Rising IBD Incidence Rates, Long-term Standardized Treatment Helps Improve Quality of Life
In recent years, with socio-economic development and lifestyle changes, digestive health has increasingly become a critical issue affecting the overall health of the nation. Among these, Inflammatory Bowel Disease, a chronic and recurrent intestinal inflammation mediated by abnormal immunity caused by multiple etiologies, presents primarily with symptoms such as abdominal pain, diarrhea, and mucus-bloody stools[1], significantly impacting patients’ personal health and quality of life[2], and is drawing growing societal attention. According to survey results from the “China IBD Blue Book,” 39% of respondents believe UC is very disruptive to life, and 60.8% of respondents feel that poor health affects their work and daily activities[5].
IBD primarily includes Ulcerative Colitis (UC) and Crohn’s Disease (CD). In recent years, the number of IBD patients in China has been rapidly increasing. In 2018, the incidence rate of IBD in China was 1.77/100,000 to 3.14/100,000[3], and by 2025, the number of IBD patients in China is expected to exceed 1.5 million[4]. With the continuous advancement of the “Healthy China 2030” strategy, the state has set higher requirements for the standardized management of chronic non-communicable diseases. Currently, the diagnosis and treatment of IBD are moving towards greater precision, individualization, and long-term comprehensive management. Taking UC as an example, the “Chinese Guidelines for the Diagnosis and Treatment of Ulcerative Colitis” (2023) clearly defines “long-term maintenance of steroid-free clinical remission, normalization of inflammatory markers, and mucosal healing, prevention of complications, ultimately improving long-term outcomes, avoiding disability, and maintaining health-related quality of life” as the long-term treatment goal[6]. For moderate to severe UC patients who have an inadequate response or intolerance to conventional therapy, both domestic and international guidelines recommend considering biologics for induction of remission[6].
Advancing Industry Development: IBD Diagnosis and Treatment Quality Control Enters the 2.0 Era, AI Empowers a New Paradigm for Patient Management
To ensure patients receive standardized, safe, and effective medical services and to enhance the homogenization level of IBD diagnosis and treatment in China, establishing a systematic quality control evaluation system is crucial. During the conference, the China Inflammatory Bowel Disease Quality Control and Evaluation Construction Committee (IBDQCC) launched the “China Inflammatory Bowel Disease Diagnosis and Treatment Quality Control Evaluation System (Second Edition).” By promoting the standardized construction and routine quality control evaluation of IBD treatment centers nationwide, a tiered development model characterized by “unified standards, progressive capabilities, and coordinated development” is taking shape, providing scientific guidance and operational pathways for comprehensively improving the homogenization level of IBD diagnosis and treatment in China.
At the level of exploring innovative technologies, the deep application of digital intelligence is redefining the connection between doctors and patients. On one hand, non-invasive monitoring technologies (such as intestinal ultrasound and fecal biomarker testing) enable clinicians to more conveniently assess patients’ intestinal inflammation status while significantly reducing patients’ reliance on and fear of invasive endoscopic re-examinations. On the other hand, digital technologies, particularly the development of artificial intelligence, create favorable conditions for building a new paradigm of continuous, full-course medical services covering screening, diagnosis, treatment, follow-up, and long-term management. Through digital intelligence innovation, the standardized diagnosis and treatment level of medical alliances can be further empowered, and patients’ self-management capabilities can be enhanced, thereby improving the quality and efficiency of IBD chronic disease management.
Promoting the high-quality development of digestive health and enhancing patient benefits relies on extensive collaboration among various sectors, including government, medical institutions, industry, academia, and research. As a global biopharmaceutical company, Takeda has long adhered to the “patient-first” philosophy, deeply cultivating the traditional advantageous field of digestion, focusing on R&D and bringing breakthrough innovative therapies to patients, while joining forces with society to optimize disease diagnosis and management systems, helping patients and their families better cope with and manage the disease. Currently, Takeda China’s digestive business layout comprehensively covers upper and lower gastrointestinal diseases, meeting multi-level clinical needs from common digestive diseases to complex rare diseases. Zhang Xun, Head of the Digestive Business Unit at Takeda China, stated: “Takeda has always been committed to open co-creation and ecological co-building, contributing to industry development and patient well-being. Looking ahead, we will continue to join hands with all sectors of society, focusing on the goals of precision, digital intelligence, and homogenization, to continuously optimize the digestive health ecosystem and ensure that innovative achievements benefit every patient.”
