At the conference, Yu Xiaoping, Senior Sales Director of Danfoss Drives China Business Unit, delivered a keynote speech titled “Danfoss PV-Storage-Direct-Flex Engineering Practices and Key DC Protection Technologies.” He stated: “As more green manufacturing and digital infrastructure projects come online, factories and data centers are becoming critical energy consumption scenarios. Although both are currently high-energy-consuming sectors, this also means there is significant room and potential for energy efficiency optimization and energy transition. By introducing technologies such as PV-storage-direct-flex and high energy efficiency, combined with collaborative efforts across the industrial chain, we can not only improve the current high-energy-consumption situation but also drive the implementation of more new energy application scenarios, reshaping the role of high-energy-consuming industries in the future energy system and promoting their transformation toward a lower-carbon, more flexible, and sustainable direction.”

PV-Storage-Direct-Flex System Empowers Green Factory Construction Practices

To further deepen the implementation of the “dual carbon” goals in the industrial manufacturing sector, China has introduced a series of supportive policies in recent years to promote the green transformation of factories, clarifying future development directions such as low-carbon energy, efficient resource utilization, clean production, and green products. Among these, developing distributed photovoltaics, industrial microgrids, and integrated “PV-storage-direct-flex” systems is seen as a key pathway to building zero-carbon factories.

At this year’s Green Factory Plant Affairs Conference, Danfoss Drives showcased its PV-storage-direct-flex system power distribution solution specifically designed for green factories. This solution leverages a flexible DC networking platform based on power electronics technology to achieve coordinated integration of source, grid, load, and storage at both planning and operational levels, effectively improving energy utilization efficiency and power supply reliability, promoting renewable energy consumption, and further enhancing the flexible regulation capability and operational resilience of the power system. The solution is derived from Danfoss’s decades of successful experience in shore power systems. It not only controls the total harmonic current distortion (THDi) on the grid side to 5% or below through AFE (Active Front End) rectification but also achieves microsecond-level isolation protection for faults like short circuits using Danfoss Drives’ patented DC solid-state circuit breaker VACON® NXP DCGuard™, significantly improving system safety and stability.

Currently, this industry-leading green factory PV-storage-direct-flex power distribution solution has been operating smoothly for over a year at Danfoss’s Haiyan Second Campus. It has not only achieved efficient, low-carbon, and intelligent energy management for the campus but also provides a replicable and referenceable solution pathway for the construction of more green factories and zero-carbon factories in the future.

Overall Energy Efficiency Optimization Solution for Data Centers

At this conference, Danfoss Drives also presented its industry-leading data center energy efficiency solution. With the rapid development of China’s digital economy, data center electricity consumption has increased significantly. In response, the National Development and Reform Commission, in collaboration with multiple departments, issued the “Special Action Plan for Green and Low-Carbon Development of Data Centers,” which proposes multiple tasks such as promoting energy-efficient technology and equipment in data centers and improving the utilization level of renewable energy, aiming to accelerate energy-saving and carbon-reduction retrofits and the replacement of energy-using equipment, promoting the green and low-carbon development of data centers.

To meet the high-efficiency and high-reliability operational demands of data centers, Danfoss Drives leverages its variable frequency and power electronics technology to build a comprehensive solution covering cooling systems and energy management. On the cooling system side, Danfoss Drives’ drives are widely used in key equipment such as chillers, CDUs (Coolant Distribution Units), computer room air conditioners, cooling pumps, chilled water pumps, and cooling towers. Users can dynamically adjust fan speed and achieve intelligent control through Danfoss Drives’ EC+ high-efficiency variable frequency solution, enabling on-demand regulation of airflow, pressure, and temperature. Combined with Danfoss Drives’ DrivePro® 360Live digital platform and CBM (Condition-Based Monitoring) technology, users can achieve real-time perception and predictive maintenance of equipment operating status, effectively reducing cooling energy consumption while ensuring system stability and improving data center PUE performance. On the energy management side, Danfoss promotes efficient synergy between renewable energy and data center loads through direct green electricity connection, flexible DC networking, and power quality management solutions. Danfoss offers a complete harmonic mitigation portfolio, including ultra-low harmonic drives, active harmonic filters, passive harmonic filters, and the MyDrive® Harmonics harmonic calculation and simulation software tool. Among these, the iC7-HVACR ULH ultra-low harmonic drive, based on SiC and three-level technology, can achieve a total harmonic current distortion (THDi) of below 3%, effectively reducing current harmonics and grid losses, improving power supply and distribution system stability and power utilization efficiency, further supporting the evolution of data centers toward high efficiency, low carbon, and high reliability.
