Grassroots Education to Boost Maternal and Infant Health Literacy

Currently, grassroots maternal and infant health education in China still faces challenges. According to a 2025 survey by the China Maternal and Child Health Association, only 41% of families of childbearing age are satisfied with their access to maternal and infant health knowledge, and the coverage rate of systematic grassroots education channels is less than 25%. To address this issue, FrieslandCampina launched a maternal and infant health education campaign in June 2025. Through community health lectures and parent-child garden activities, it systematically disseminates knowledge on pre-pregnancy care, scientific feeding, disease prevention, and early development. This helps women of childbearing age and their families learn about health throughout the entire cycle of pregnancy, childbirth, and childcare, alleviating parenting anxiety and improving family caregiving capabilities.

The parent-child garden party in the community square featured four immersive themed experience zones, embedding maternal and infant health concepts into more families through fun interactions. The “Active Sports Zone” and “Fun Games Zone” offered parent-child activities like baby crawling races and health knowledge board games; the “Science and Health Zone” provided health consultations and practical nursing guidance; and the “Creative Crafts Zone” fostered emotional bonds between parents and children through warm collaboration.

Urban-Rural Linkage to Enhance Pregnancy and Infant Care Standards

Launched on the same day, the “Loving Nanny” project was initiated by Royal FrieslandCampina in partnership with the China Foundation for Rural Development in 2016. After a decade of deep cultivation, it aims to train women from underdeveloped regions to become professional nannies and maternity matrons. This not only helps disadvantaged women achieve financial independence through labor but also effectively alleviates the demand for maternal and infant care services in urban families, achieving a win-win urban-rural linkage. In 2026, the FrieslandCampina “Loving Nanny” project continues to innovate, planning to upgrade specialized maternal and infant care training, expand science-based childcare education in underdeveloped areas, further empower women’s employment, and popularize scientific childcare knowledge.

At the launch ceremony, Li Zhirong, a nanny from Zhenyuan County, Qingyang City, Gansu Province, shared her story: “Due to the heavy burden of my family of origin, life was once very difficult. In 2018, I participated in the FrieslandCampina ‘Loving Nanny’ public welfare training and obtained a professional certificate. I worked as a nanny in Beijing for three years, achieving a significant increase in income. After returning home, I still receive stable orders, and my family’s living conditions have greatly improved. Helping new parents with scientific childcare knowledge also makes me feel very valuable.” Her growth story is a vivid example of the project’s “empower her power” initiative.

On the afternoon of May 29, the project team visited a postpartum care center in Qilihe District, Lanzhou, where FrieslandCampina loving nannies are employed. A skills enhancement training session for nannies was underway, where professional instructors not only demonstrated postpartum recovery and care techniques hands-on but also focused on explaining postpartum psychological counseling. The nannies practiced, exchanged ideas, and asked questions, learning diligently and thoroughly. Meanwhile, the “Mommy Class” at the care center was also very popular. Experts alleviated new mothers’ parenting anxiety one by one through gentle touch demonstrations and easy-to-understand nutrition explanations.

Ding Yadong, Deputy Secretary-General of the China Foundation for Rural Development, stated: “Over the years, in collaboration with FrieslandCampina, we have expanded from the initial Loving Nanny project to areas such as child nutrition care and maternal and infant health education. This not only helps rural women increase their income and realize their self-worth but also widely disseminates scientific parenting concepts to society. We hope to use this as a link to build a maternal and infant health support platform led by the government, with social collaboration and family participation, ensuring continuous care and enduring warmth.”

Resource Integration to Build a Long-Term Support Network

In 2026, FrieslandCampina further deeply integrates the “Loving Nanny Project” with the “Maternal and Infant Health Education Campaign,” promoting long-term linkages between urban and rural resources and educational resources. This builds a maternal and infant health support network from “cognitive enhancement” to “service support,” achieving a caring cycle from “empowering women” to “protecting women.”

In terms of talent development and service delivery, the project plans to provide 16 days of fully enclosed basic maternal and infant care training in Beijing for 100 low-income women nationwide, helping over 90% of trainees obtain professional level certificates. Additionally, it will offer advanced training for 400 in-service caregivers at 15 postpartum care centers in Beijing, Lanzhou, Zhengzhou, and other cities. These loving nannies will work alongside experts to further conduct online and offline “Mommy Classes,” ensuring professional care skills truly help new mothers. In terms of educational coverage, the focus will be on resource-poor counties and urban-rural fringe areas, planning educational activities in 8 cities and counties and establishing online communities to provide long-term consultation and interaction platforms for nannies and mothers. The total number of beneficiaries for the year is expected to exceed 300,000.
