Schizophrenia is a chronic and often disabling mental illness, affecting approximately 8 million adults in China. Core symptoms include positive symptoms (such as hallucinations and delusions), negative symptoms (such as loss of motivation and pleasure, and social withdrawal), and cognitive symptoms (such as deficits in memory, attention, and decision-making).

Dr. Wang Yizhe, Operating Partner at Zai Lab, said, “The impact of schizophrenia on patients goes far beyond obvious symptoms; the core challenge lies in impaired social function. Xanomeline Trospium Chloride Capsules fill a gap in clinical treatment, offering patients a chance to return to life and society. The launch of this innovative drug also responds to the national call for mental health development, injecting new momentum into addressing treatment challenges.”

Since establishing its presence in Suzhou Industrial Park in 2015, Zai Lab has been deeply rooted in this fertile ground for a decade. Suzhou has witnessed the launch of multiple products from Zai Lab in areas such as oncology, immunology, infectious diseases, and neuroscience, with these products effectively helping numerous patients and families.

Dr. Yan Shuizhong, Chief Operating Officer of Global R&D at Zai Lab, stated, “Suzhou is the only city in Zai Lab’s global layout that integrates production, R&D, and commercialization. The launch of Xanomeline Trospium Chloride Capsules today is the latest testament to our deep roots in Suzhou and collaborative innovation. We will continue to leverage the industrial advantages of Suzhou Industrial Park to accelerate the journey of more innovative drugs from the lab to the production line, and from the park to patients nationwide, actively contributing to the park’s goal of building a world-class biomedical innovation hub.”

Currently, commonly used antipsychotic drugs primarily target dopamine receptors. While they offer some control over positive symptoms, they provide limited improvement for negative and cognitive symptoms and are associated with significant side effects, including weight gain, hyperprolactinemia, and extrapyramidal symptoms such as muscle stiffness and tremors. These side effects affect long-term treatment adherence and impose a heavy burden on caregivers.

Professor Wang Gang, President of Beijing Anding Hospital, Capital Medical University, and Principal Investigator of the Phase III clinical trial of Xanomeline Trospium Chloride Capsules in China, said, “Xanomeline Trospium Chloride Capsules are the first antipsychotic drug with a novel mechanism of action in over 70 years, providing clinicians with a new option. With the nationwide launch of this drug, we look forward to more patients benefiting and returning to normal life.”

Xanomeline Trospium Chloride Capsules were approved by the National Medical Products Administration in December 2025 for the treatment of schizophrenia in adults. The drug has been included in the Chinese Guidelines for the Prevention and Treatment of Schizophrenia (2025 Edition) issued by the Chinese Medical Association and the Chinese Expert Consensus on the Management of Negative Symptoms of Schizophrenia (2026).
