Once operational, the new power plant will serve as a key flexible power source for the Abu Dhabi emirate’s electricity system, enhancing grid stability and facilitating the integration of large-scale renewable energy. The plant has been designed with provisions for future deployment of carbon capture and storage facilities, supporting the UAE’s goal of achieving climate neutrality by 2050.
The project is being developed by an international consortium comprising Abu Dhabi National Energy Company (TAQA), Saudi Arabia’s Al Jomaih Energy & Water Company, and Singapore’s Sembcorp Industries. A consortium led by China Energy International Group Co., Ltd., China Energy Engineering Group Guangdong Electric Power Design Institute Co., Ltd., and China Energy Engineering Group Guangdong Fire Power Engineering Co., Ltd. serves as the project’s general contractor, responsible for engineering, procurement, and construction. All electricity generated by the plant will be purchased by the Emirates Water and Electricity Company (EWEC).
Karim Amin, Member of the Global Executive Committee of Siemens Energy AG, stated: “As global energy systems face the dual challenges of rising demand and the need to balance reliability with flexibility, the role of dispatchable gas-fired power generation is becoming increasingly important.
