Construction of Sanya’s New Urban Cultural Landmark Begins, Expected to Open in 2028

On the morning of the event, invited guests jointly initiated the launch ceremony of the Haitang Performing Arts Center by clapping a clapperboard.
“Sanya boasts unique policy advantages from the free trade port. The performing arts industry is included in the encouraged industry catalog of the free trade port, and combined with multiple supporting policies at the provincial and municipal levels, it forms a rare investment advantage nationwide,” said Huang Xing, Director of the Sanya Tourism and Culture Bureau and concurrently Party Secretary of the Sanya Tourism Development Bureau, in his speech. He stated that Sanya will rely on the Haitang Performing Arts Center as an important platform to innovatively create a new integrated business model of “film festival + grand show + tourism.” The city will continuously introduce high-quality international performing arts resources, deepen cross-border cultural industry cooperation, and strive to make Sanya a front-row window for cultural opening-up under the free trade port and for Chinese culture going global, as well as a key bridgehead for the international development of the film and television industry.
As a key municipal-level cultural tourism project led by the Sanya municipal government, the center is located at Haitang Bay in Sanya, the “National Coast.” Designed with the concept of “One Begonia Flower,” it adopts a layout of one main and multiple auxiliary begonia petals. Covering a total area of approximately 36,000 square meters with a building area of about 37,000 square meters, it is expected to be officially put into use in December 2028.
Its interior space is well-equipped with top-tier hardware, fully benchmarked against the standards of the renowned Cannes International Film Festival. This includes a 1,200-seat main auditorium, a 400-seat multi-function hall, two professional screening rooms, and three professional screening review rooms, making it one of the few professional cultural venues in Sanya capable of fully hosting the entire process of an international film festival.

The Haitang Performing Arts Center is fully functional, integrating four major functions: film festivals and celebrations, performing arts shows, art exhibitions, and cultural leisure. It can provide one-stop services for various high-end cultural activities, including film festival opening and closing ceremonies, award galas, red carpet events, IP performance spectaculars, film premieres, and crew exchanges.
Once completed, the center will serve as the permanent venue for the Hainan Island International Film Festival. The Hainan Island International Film Festival, first held in 2018, features events such as the opening ceremony, the “Golden Coconut Award” competition and judging, film screenings, the Golden Coconut Forum, the Golden Coconut Carnival, and the closing ceremony and “Golden Coconut Award” presentation.
