Bayer Nematicide Patents Safeguard, Confronting Nematode Damage Head-On

Currently, nematode damage has become a key challenge restricting crop quality improvement and yield increase. Globally, nematodes cause agricultural losses exceeding hundreds of billions of US dollars annually. Nematode diseases are highly covert, with delayed detection. Affected crops are prone to root knots, spongy tissue, and root rot, not only impacting growth and yield but also causing fruit deformities and poor appearance, significantly reducing commodity value and farmer income.

Associate Professor Cui Jiangkuan from the College of Plant Protection, Henan Agricultural University, also pointed out that root-knot nematodes have become one of the most prominent soil-borne diseases in China’s facility agriculture, often forming complex infections with various other pathogens, causing severe damage, leading to sustained economic losses for crop production. He stated, “In the past, nematode control often relied on highly toxic chemicals. Although effective quickly, this contradicts the concept of green agricultural development. Efficient, low-toxicity, green, and safe specialized integrated prevention and control models are the general trend. The majority of growers need to establish the concept of prevention first and scientific medication, simultaneously improve the soil ecological environment, and build a comprehensive systematic nematode prevention and control system.”

Professor Cui mentioned that SDHI-type novel nematicides possess unique mechanisms of action and excellent systemic conductivity, precisely targeting the active stages of nematodes, while also offering advantages such as flexible application, stable efficacy, and long-lasting effects. Long-term field trial data from his team shows that Verango® can achieve over 70% comprehensive nematode control efficacy in tobacco crops and significantly improve tobacco yield and quality, providing strong validation for the practical application of green prevention and control systems.

Dual-Brand Synergistic Layout, Differentiated Solutions Deployed in the Field

Relying on original patented ingredients, Bayer has developed two high-quality nematicide products: Verango® and Velum®. Verango®, with the core concept of “Stable Nematode Control, More Profits,” is the world’s first SDHI-type innovative product applied to nematode control and has received the “Green Agricultural Input” certification from the China Green Food Association. Meanwhile, Velum® is currently the nematicide brand with the most registered crops in China, performing excellently in the market for root and tuber crops such as sweet potatoes, ginger, potatoes, and carrots. These two nematicide products complement each other, jointly building Bayer’s complete market layout for nematicide products.

Deng Tao, Nematicide Product Manager at Bayer Crop Science, introduced in his speech that the two nematode control products have four key advantages: First, dual efficacy of nematicide and bacteriostasis, combining contact and systemic action for rapid nematode elimination and reducing root wounds; Second, adsorption and soil retention for long-term root protection, firmly remaining in the core root growth area of the crop with a long duration of efficacy; Third, high efficiency and low toxicity, maintaining stable efficacy even at high dilution ratios, with low toxicity to users and the environment; Fourth, ecological compatibility and soil conservation, without disrupting soil pH balance or beneficial microbial communities, compatible with biological agents for dual benefits of pest control and soil protection.

“Bayer Crop Science will subsequently launch regionally customized application schemes tailored to local conditions, create differentiated product combinations, and carry out multiple initiatives such as industry exchanges, farmer technical training, and offline store empowerment. In the future, Bayer will also implement the construction of 100 flagship stores, comprehensively assisting partners in expanding the market, and effectively solving various underground planting problems for farmers with high-quality products and professional agronomic services,” Deng Tao added.

At the forum, several front-line channel partners shared practical experiences. Wang Bingyan, head of Hou Dong Agricultural Supplies in Sunying Township, Tongxu County, Kaifeng City, stated that nematodes not only affect the appearance and profitability of local carrots but also that pesticide residue issues hinder high-end market access and exports. Relying on Bayer’s technical support, she gradually opened up the market through demonstrations, provided in-depth field services, steadily increased sales, and helped implement the concept of green prevention and control. Yao Ge, Manager of Zhengzhou Guoxing Agricultural Materials Co., Ltd., mentioned that Verango® has shown outstanding performance on crops like tomatoes, cucumbers, and watermelons, accumulating many repeat customers due to its visible effectiveness. Cao Yinguang, a retailer of Yuqing Agricultural Supplies in Baliping, Hua County, introduced that nematode problems were prominent in the local loofah growing area. After introducing Velum® for trial demonstrations, field follow-ups confirmed its excellent efficacy. The word-of-mouth among these channel partners and the farmers they serve fully validates the field application effects of Verango® and Velum®, further boosting the confidence of growers and partners in collaboration.

Driven by Root Zone Protection, Building Integrated Solutions and Services

Based on the actual needs of current field cultivation, Bayer is continuously expanding the application scenarios of its nematicide products, constructing systematic solutions represented by “Root Zone Protection” to enhance overall service levels. According to Deng Tao, Bayer’s Root Zone Protection solution coordinates nematode control, root disease management, and soil microecological conditioning around root health. Verango® and Velum® are the two core products in this system dedicated to nematode control, forming an organic whole with the comprehensive solution to help growers upgrade from single-method control to systematic management.

Li Peng, Senior Agronomist at Bayer Crop Science, elaborated on the localized application approach of the “Root Zone Protection” solution based on the planting conditions in Henan. The “Root Zone Protection” solution precisely adapts to the planting needs of economic crops in Henan, such as sweet potatoes, carrots, ginger, yams, and Chinese medicinal herbs. Growers can use core nematicide products like Verango® and Velum® to control nematode diseases, while also using disease prevention agents like Infinito® and Folicur® to manage soil-borne diseases, promoting robust root development and stable plant growth. On this basis, it can be combined with biological agents like Serenade® and mineral nutrient fertilizers to condition the soil and maintain fertility, helping farmers achieve stable yields, quality improvement, and efficient income growth from the foundation of planting.

Regarding the “Root Zone Protection” solution, Li Xianwei, Henan Regional Manager at Bayer Crop Science, shared Bayer’s promotion strategy in Henan: “To stand firm in the fiercely competitive market, we must deliver hardcore, effective solutions. Therefore, Bayer is fully promoting the implementation of ‘Root Zone Protection’ in the central region.” “Bayer will leverage diverse forms such as field demonstration observations and digital empowerment to comprehensively support channel partners, helping them enhance service capabilities, reach the front line in a more professional and diversified manner, and precisely serve the vast number of growers, jointly seeking new opportunities for agricultural development.” He emphasized, “Bayer Crop Science is firmly committed to walking hand-in-hand with channel partners.”

In the future, the Bayer Nematicide Brand Summit Forum China Tour will continue to delve into key national planting production areas, relying on Bayer’s strong product synergy and comprehensive service system. Together with channel partners and the vast number of growers, it aims to enhance the comprehensive level of nematode prevention and control, contributing to the stable yield, quality improvement, and green development of Chinese agriculture.
