LondonJune 13, 2026 /PRNewswire/ — According to the latest “Insights Focus” report from GSMA Intelligence, the 2026 FIFA World Cup hosted in Canada, Mexico, and the United States presents significant opportunities for mobile operators: both in providing resilient, high-capacity network connectivity and in supporting new enterprise services and enhancing consumer experiences. Given the expected traffic surges in stadiums, fan zones, airports, and host cities, operators are intensifying their 5G network densification efforts, including small cells, distributed antenna systems, millimeter wave, Wi-Fi access points, temporary base stations, backhaul network upgrades, and additional spectrum allocation.
The report notes that this opportunity extends far beyond basic network coverage. For enterprise clients and event organizers, technologies such as private 5G, edge computing, and the Internet of Things can support critical event operations including broadcasting, video assistant referee systems, public safety, crowd management, digital signage, connected cameras, drones, and ambulances. Major U.S. operators are progressively deploying 5G standalone networks, and the report indicates that advanced features like network slicing are likely to provide the technical foundation for various differentiated connectivity needs.
On the consumer side, the World Cup also opens up new revenue streams for operators. These include travel eSIM packages for international visitors, premium experience packages with guaranteed speeds, priority access, and low latency, as well as network-native services like real-time translation that require no app downloads or dedicated hardware. GSMA Intelligence notes that consumers are increasingly favoring such network-based services.
The report also points out that even if operators do not directly secure content rights, there are still other revenue-generating avenues. These opportunities include collaborating with official broadcasters to provide immersive and extended content such as XR and multi-angle viewing, supporting fan journey services through location-aware information, and integrating travel arrangements and venue entry functions to optimize the match-day experience. Overall, the report indicates that major sporting events like the 2026 World Cup are becoming key platforms for operators to demonstrate the value of advanced networks, explore new service models, and solidify their position in the digital experience economy.
