WenshanMay 21, 2026 /PRNewswire/ — From May 19 to 21, the Shanghai EssilorLuxottica Vision Health Foundation (hereinafter referred to as “the Foundation”) led a team of professional volunteers back to Maguan County, Wenshan Prefecture, Yunnan Province, launching a three-day “One Vision” youth vision health public welfare project. Supported by the Hongkou District Cooperation and Exchange Office of Shanghai, this marks the fifth consecutive year the Foundation has conducted eye health initiatives in Wenshan Prefecture.
Professional Team Gathers in Wenshan: Top-Tier Service Illuminates Classrooms
For this event, the Foundation assembled a volunteer team of nearly 40 ophthalmologists and optometry experts from across China, dubbed “Messengers of Light.” They traveled from various regions to Maguan and stationed themselves at Maguan County No. 1 High School, providing systematic eye screenings, precise refraction tests, and free eyeglasses for 1,149 local students. The volunteer team not only brought advanced screening and refraction equipment and extensive clinical experience but also a passionate commitment to public welfare.
During the screenings, volunteers discovered a 16-year-old boy who could barely see even the largest “E” character on the vision chart. An examination revealed that his myopia in both eyes had exceeded 500 degrees, yet he had never worn glasses. A volunteer remarked with concern, “In cities, children with myopia are often detected early and fitted with glasses, but here, many children are still ‘enduring’ the problem.” Fortunately, an ophthalmic examination confirmed that the boy’s retina was not damaged, and he could achieve normal vision with glasses. To address this, the “One Vision” project also invited expert volunteers to deliver engaging and beneficial eye health education sessions for students amidst their busy refraction schedules. This initiative not only solved the students’ vision problems with custom-fitted glasses but also planted the seeds of eye health awareness in their hearts.
In addition to screenings and free eyeglasses, the Foundation collaborated with the Shanghai Seeing Love Volunteer Service Center to simultaneously conduct eye health education during this trip to Wenshan Prefecture. The effort aimed to help students develop scientific eye care habits through the linkage of schools, families, and medical resources.
Five Years of Support for Wenshan: Building a Vision Public Welfare Ecosystem
This trip to Maguan marks another milestone in the Foundation’s five-year public welfare journey in Wenshan Prefecture, Yunnan Province. Since 2022, with support from the Hongkou District Cooperation and Exchange Office of Shanghai, the EssilorLuxottica Vision Health Foundation has established a long-term partnership with Wenshan Prefecture. Over five years, the “One Vision, Seeing Love” project has been continuously implemented, reaching counties such as Funing, Xichou, Qiubei, and Maguan in Wenshan. To date, the Foundation has donated a total of 27,800 pairs of reading glasses, 22,900 pairs of sunglasses, and 4,837 pairs of prescription glasses to the people of Wenshan. It has also trained over 300 grassroots doctors to become local “Eye Health Ambassadors,” continuously strengthening the capacity of primary-level eye health services and bringing the “right to see” to every corner of Wenshan.
