Jiahui Health Hosts “Little Hands Holding Big Hands” Children’s Day Event; Chief Pediatrician Teng Guoliang: Pediatrics Is Shifting from “Treating Illness” to “Guarding Growth”

From Disease Treatment to Health Management: Jiahui Pediatrics Implements Strategic Transformation through Family Activities, with Nearly 100,000 Annual Outpatient Visits

ShanghaiJune 3, 2026 /PRNewswire/ — On the eve of Children’s Day, Jiahui Health hosted the “Little Hands Holding Big Hands • Family Health Guardian Day” themed event at Shanghai Jiahui International Hospital. Targeting families with children aged 0 to 14, the event featured age-specific interactive courses and a family garden party, showcasing Jiahui Pediatrics’ strategic shift from “disease treatment” to “health management.” Professor Teng Guoliang, Director of Pediatrics at Shanghai Jiahui International Hospital, stated in his speech that the role of pediatricians is undergoing structural changes, with the future core value lying in “partnering with parents to jointly address children’s growth issues.”

Teng Guoliang: Pediatrics Has Undergone Three Phases of Change Over Four Decades

Director Teng Guoliang, with over 40 years of clinical pediatric experience, reflected in his speech that the development of pediatrics in China can be broadly divided into three stages: the early stage focused on preventing and treating infectious and epidemic diseases, with massive outpatient volumes; the middle stage, driven by medical advances and the popularization of prenatal and postnatal care, saw improved parental disease awareness, though consultations remained primarily offline; and the current stage, where internet healthcare, artificial intelligence, and home testing methods are increasingly mature, significantly reducing the frequency of hospital visits by parents.

“It’s not that children aren’t getting sick anymore, but the consultation model has changed,” Teng noted. He pointed out that this shift reflects societal progress and imposes new demands on pediatricians. He believes that parents’ core anxiety has shifted from “Will my child get sick?” to “Can my child grow up healthy?” This is reflected in three key areas of need: prevention (e.g., vaccinations), growth and development (e.g., weight management, posture issues), and mental health.

“Home-School-Hospital” Joint Clinic Case: From “ADHD” to a National Art Exhibition

Teng shared a typical case at the event. A middle school student visited the clinic due to school aversion and suspected ADHD. After evaluation by the Jiahui Pediatrics team, it was found that the child had no learning disabilities but displayed exceptional talent and focus in painting. Jiahui collaborated with the parents and school to adjust the child’s developmental path, and the student’s artwork eventually won an award at a national youth art exhibition and was displayed overseas.

“Today’s pediatricians must not only diagnose illnesses but also recognize children’s various issues and potentials during their growth, working with parents to nurture and guide them,” Teng said. Jiahui Health launched a child-adolescent “Home-School-Hospital” joint clinic in 2024, involving pediatricians and senior psychological counselors to provide ongoing tracking and periodic assessments, aiming to address psychological and behavioral issues in children that are difficult for families or schools to handle alone.

Event Data: Four Dedicated Sessions Covering Ages 0-14, 15 Free Health Screening Slots Offered On-Site

The event recruited 100 families, with four age-specific sessions held indoors:

  • Ages 3-6: “Body Exploration Picture Book Story Time” – Co-taught by Jiahui ophthalmologists and developers of Zhuqiao children’s picture books, helping children understand their bodies and learn how to express discomfort and seek help.
  • Ages 10 and above: “CPR & AED Parent-Child First Aid Course” – Children and parents learned and practiced CPR and AED under the guidance of AHA-certified instructors, gaining new health protection skills.
  • Ages 7 and above: “Art Workshop Public Benefit Session” – Conducted in collaboration with psychosomatic medicine specialists and child psychotherapists for art therapy experiences, with a simultaneous outreach to left-behind children in Guoluo, Qinghai.
  • Ages 0-3: “Little Kangaroo Parent-Child Dance Party” – Led by professional parent-child movement instructors, babies and parents used music and movement to promote early parent-child bonding and early limb motor development.

After the activities, children received various themed certificates, such as “Little Body Guardian” and “Family First Aid Hero.” Jiahui Pediatrics also offered 15 free children’s health screening slots on-site, with multiple disciplines working together to safeguard children’s health. The outdoor garden party featured interactive health booths from pediatrics, child healthcare, ophthalmology, dentistry, general practice, traditional Chinese medicine, otolaryngology, and dermatology, allowing children to learn through play and gain health knowledge in games. Partner brands including grin, Zhuqiao, ergobaby, Yingpu, Marissa, Cybex, OLIVIO & CO, Playtoys, Muse & Friends, Yuze, and Laundry House co-created a healthy parent-child lifestyle.
