——Filling the gap in the full-industry-chain platform, driving China’s exosome technology to the global stage
BeijingJune 8, 2026 /PRNewswire/ — Currently, the exosome track has become one of the most promising growth directions in the global biomedical field. However, long-standing pain points such as highly fragmented academic research, lack of industry standards, unclear regulatory pathways, and difficulties in connecting capital with projects have constrained China’s exosome industry from moving from “bustling” to “standardized.”
On June 1, 2026, the International Exosome Technologies & Research Institute (IERI) was officially established, jointly initiated by multiple organizations including iBIO, Bio-innova, Ouryao, Baimaisainuo Biotechnology, Coleso Medical, Dongcheng Kechuang, and Beijing Liuxing Pharmaceutical Research Center.
The institute is positioned as an industry platform-type research institute, not bounded by legal entities, with core missions centered on resource integration, industry consensus, and standard output. Dr. Zhao Xiaojian, Academician of the European Academy of Natural Sciences and founder of Bio-innova, serves as the Dean; Zhang Jinwei, founder of Ouryao and founding dean of the Shanghai Lingang Industrial University Biomedical College, serves as the Vice Dean; and Dong Yue serves as the Secretary-General.
Four Core Functions, Bridging the Full Chain from Research to Application
Unlike traditional academic institutions, the International Exosome Technologies & Research Institute focuses on industry needs, aiming to serve as a bridge connecting laboratories with clinics, technology with capital, and research with markets. The institute defines four core functions:
1. Academic Research and Standard Development
Regularly publish the “White Paper on the Development of China’s Exosome Industry,” organize cross-institutional joint research projects, and promote the creation of group standards for exosome preparation, quality control, and applications from scratch, filling gaps in industry norms.
2. Industry Empowerment and Capital Matching
Build an exosome industry project database and investment and financing matching platform, provide incubation guidance for startups, connect resources from CDMOs, CROs, and industrial parks, and facilitate efficient transformation of technological achievements.
3. Brand Communication and Summit Events
Host the annual China Exosome Industry Summit, leverage the media and industry resources of co-founding organizations, continuously produce high-quality content, and enhance the visibility of outstanding technologies and products within the industry.
4. Policy Research and Government Consulting
Regularly publish industry policy tracking reports, provide industrial planning recommendations for local governments, participate in regulatory policy research and feedback, and help build a scientific, transparent, and predictable industry environment.
Academician Technology and Strategy Committee, Led by the First Three Academicians
To further strengthen the institute’s academic depth and strategic foresight, the institute has established an “Academician Technology and Strategy Committee,” responsible for and leading core tasks such as formulating the institute’s development strategy, academic research, and research on exosome drug mechanisms.
The first batch of technology and strategy experts consists of three academicians with international influence in fields such as cellular immunity, cardiovascular pharmacology, exosomes, and bioengineering:
1. Academician Su Dingfeng
Foreign Academician of the French Academy of Pharmacy, Foreign Academician of the French Academy of Medical Sciences, former Professor of Pharmacology at the Second Military Medical University, recipient of the National Natural Science Second Prize (first completer), and Chief Scientist of the National 973 Project.
Academician Su enjoys a high international reputation in the fields of cardiovascular pharmacology, hypertension, stroke, and arterial baroreflex research. He has led the development of the national Class I new drugs Nitrendipine/Losartan tablets and Alisartan tablets, which have been successfully launched.
2. Academician Wu Jiong
Foreign Academician of the Russian Academy of Engineering, world-renowned cell and immunobioengineer, former Professor at McGill University, and Chief Scientist at several biomedical companies.
Academician Wu holds over 30 international patents in fields such as stem cell process biology, immune engineering, and tumor therapy. He collaborated with Nobel laureate Professor Yamanaka to produce core products for iPS cell technology.
3. Academician Zhao Xiaojian
Academician of the European Academy of Natural Sciences, founder of Bio-innova, and Dean of the International Exosome Technologies & Research Institute.
Academician Zhao has extensive industrial experience in cell culture media, large-scale exosome preparation, and quality control systems, and is a key driver in moving exosomes from the laboratory to industrialization.
4. Academician Zhang Jinwei
Life Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts, founder of Ouryao, founding dean of the Shanghai Lingang Industrial University Biomedical College, and Vice Dean of the International Exosome Technologies & Research Institute.
Academician Zhang has over 20 years of deep experience in strategic planning for the full pharmaceutical industry chain and industry platform construction. He has invested in and incubated nearly 20 biomedical projects and serves as a think tank expert advisor for multiple government departments and biomedical industrial parks. He leads the systematic and scaled transformation of exosome technology achievements from the laboratory to the market, driving the industry ecosystem from fragmentation to synergy.
The establishment of the Academician Technology and Strategy Committee marks that the institute possesses national and international decision-making and driving capabilities across four dimensions: academic depth, industrial height, strategic foresight, and platform capacity. The four academicians form a top-tier think tank architecture with a “technology + industry” dual-wheel drive, laying a solid foundation for the institute’s long-term development.
Five Professional Committees, Gathering Professional Strength Across the Full Industry Chain
The institute has established an Expert Committee, with Dean Dr. Zhao Xiaojian concurrently serving as its director. Additionally, five professional committees have been set up, covering core tracks in the exosome field:
Exosome Preparation and Quality Control Committee
Exosome Clinical Translation Committee
Exosome Drug Delivery Committee
Exosome Medical Aesthetics and Regenerative Medicine Committee
Exosome Detection and Diagnostics Committee
Each committee involves top industry scientists, clinical experts, and corporate technical leaders, ensuring a balance between professional depth and industrial implementation.
Among them, Shanghai Coleso Medical, as a co-founding organization, serves as the co-chair unit of the “Exosome Clinical Translation Committee,” deeply participating in clinical pathway development and standard setting, becoming one of the institute’s first benchmark demonstration cases.
Building a Globally Authoritative Voice in China’s Exosome Field
The establishment of the institute fills a long-standing gap in China’s exosome industry, which lacked a full-industry-chain, international, and industry-oriented research platform. By bringing together international academicians, top scientists, leading enterprises, and industry media, the institute aims to form a “academia + industry + communication” trinity ecosystem, driving China’s exosome industry from fragmentation to synergy and from following to leading.
Effective immediately, the International Exosome Technologies & Research Institute has commenced operations.
Scientists, entrepreneurs, clinical experts, investment institutions, and industrial parks from around the world in the exosome field are welcome to contact and engage, jointly participating in standard setting, research projects, summit events, and industry collaborations.
