In automotive display manufacturing, adhesive solutions are the mainstream technology to meet the market’s growing demand for sleek, ultra-thin bezels. Through the collaboration with AUMOVIO, tesa is now taking the next step. The new solution combines state-of-the-art bonding technology with optimized material usage and a pioneering concept, achieving a controllable, detachable adhesive bond. This simplifies corrections during production and repairs throughout the product lifecycle.

Precise Bonding, Secure and Reliable, Detachable on Demand

This new process is implemented via robotic tape application. The bond is load-bearing immediately after application and can be seamlessly integrated into existing production lines. At the same time, this bond is detachable on demand, allowing the display assembly to be selectively replaced or reworked during production or repair without needing to replace the entire display module.

David Caro, Head of Automotive at tesa, stated: “This collaboration demonstrates how innovative material technology can drive the future of human mobility. Together with AUMOVIO, we provide an automated adhesive bonding solution that offers long-term durability while also allowing for debonding on demand—enabling efficient production, extended product lifecycles, and circular product concepts. This helps customers translate sustainability goals into tangible product solutions.”

Pavel Prouza, Head of the User Experience (UX) business area at AUMOVIO, explained: “Combining high-precision, automated adhesive application with targeted detachability adds a crucial element to our manufacturing and quality processes. It not only enhances production robustness and reduces material waste but also promotes the effective utilization of high-value components. For end customers, this could mean that future repairs may only require the cost-effective replacement of the affected individual component.”

A More Sustainable Display Solution: Strong Bonding, Yet Still Detachable

The new solution is a significant step towards the future, combining the proven advantages of viscoelastic adhesive bonding with features that support recyclability. This bond requires no curing time and effectively compensates for material expansion and contraction across the full temperature range common in automotive environments. With fully automated application, the solution integrates seamlessly into existing production lines. The tape width is only 2 millimeters, enabling extremely narrow display bezels comparable to smartphone designs.

Simultaneously, the bond is detachable on demand. The display assembly can be selectively replaced or reworked during production or repair without needing to replace the entire display module.

The tape used by tesa and AUMOVIO features “Debonding on Demand” technology, allowing selective disassembly with minimal force.

This facilitates the replacement of individual display units during the product lifecycle and enables recycling at the end of the vehicle’s service life. AUMOVIO is already in discussions with automakers about implementing component-specific recycling and repair programs. This solution supports the circular economy, creating long-term economic, social, and environmental value through innovative mobility solutions, making a tangible contribution to AUMOVIO’s sustainability strategy.

With the official launch of the collaboration, tesa and AUMOVIO are currently preparing to integrate this new solution into mass production in the second quarter of 2026.
