Bonn, GermanyMay 7, 2026 /PRNewswire/ — DHL Express today announced the launch of an AI-powered item identification feature, a first in the international express shipping industry. This innovative function leverages advanced computer vision technology to analyze photos of items uploaded by customers, instantly generating precise, customs-compliant item descriptions. This simplifies one of the most complex steps in international shipping, delivering a seamless and smooth service experience.
This development once again underscores DHL Express’s commitment to simplifying cross-border shipping through practical, customer-centric innovation. Accurately describing shipment contents to meet customs requirements has traditionally demanded specialized knowledge and precise wording. By embedding AI directly into the booking process, DHL Express eliminates this complexity, thereby improving data quality, reducing the risk of delays, and making international shipping more accessible and reliable for users of all experience levels.
Customers simply need to take a photo of the item they wish to send using any standard smartphone or connected device. The AI system processes the image through a server-side computer vision model, identifies the item category, and generates a structured, customs-compliant item description within seconds. The system presents the suggested description to the customer, who can easily review, edit, or modify it before submitting the shipment. No DHL Express account is required for the entire process, ensuring a simple and smooth experience. This deployment marks a significant step forward for applied artificial intelligence in the logistics industry and is the first time an item identification feature has been seamlessly integrated into a customer-facing, large-scale, real-world international express booking process.
Dirk Olufs, Executive Vice President and Chief Information Officer at DHL Express, noted: “Computer vision technology has been officially launched for customers in several markets, but what matters most is the tangible results it delivers. Achieving accurate item classification at the data entry stage means higher data quality throughout the entire shipping process: fewer holds, faster customs clearance, and a better customer experience.”
Enna Zarate, Senior Vice President and Head of Digital Customer Solutions at DHL Express, added: “The item description field may seem like a minor issue, but it has historically been a pain point in the customer experience. This AI feature is a direct response to customer feedback, and we are proud that DHL Express is the first in the industry to put it into practice and serve our customers with it.”
For a long time, the international express industry has relied on shippers to self-declare item contents without substantial assistance. Although customs declaration tools have evolved in other areas, the core step of item description has remained dependent on manual input, requiring shippers to have knowledge of customs requirements. DHL Express’s deployment marks the first time computer vision item identification technology has been applied on a large scale within a real-world, customer-facing international express booking process.
The feature is now available in eight markets, including: Canada, Germany, Hong Kong SAR China, the Netherlands, Singapore, South Africa, Spain, and the United Arab Emirates. According to the plan, it will be further expanded to more markets in 2026.
