HYROX Hong Kong Records 27-Fold Growth in Four Years, Sets Asian Participation Record

Economic Circle Drives Fitness Industry Chain and Sports Tourism “Festivalization” to Amplify the Charm of Major Sporting Events

Hong KongMay 15, 2026 /PRNewswire/ — The globally popular indoor fitness competition HYROX Hong Kong successfully concluded at the AsiaWorld-Expo (AWE) recently, setting a record as the largest edition ever and breaking the Asian participation record. The 3-day event attracted nearly 20,000 participants, 30% of whom were overseas athletes from 60 countries and regions. The competition not only showcased Hong Kong’s capability in hosting “festivalized” sporting events but also effectively drove the local tourism and fitness industry chain, benefiting sectors such as hotels, catering, retail, fitness, and nutrition, creating a synergistic effect for the event. The event featured multiple categories, including elite and senior groups, and also included doubles, four-person relay races, and corporate teams, making it suitable for athletes of varying levels and abilities. This has turned it into a global fitness trend, further popularizing fitness activities.

The HYROX indoor fitness competition is highly challenging. Participants must complete an 8-kilometer run, with different fitness exercises between each kilometer, including ski erg, sled push, burpees, rowing machine, kettlebell and sandbag carries, and medicine ball throws. It is highly favored by fitness enthusiasts worldwide.

The first HYROX event globally was held in Germany in 2018, and the 2025/26 season spans 85 cities across continents. The Hong Kong edition has been held annually since 2022, always at the AWE, making it one of the most important competition points in the Asia-Pacific region. The first Hong Kong edition had around 700 participants, but the market has expanded rapidly, with a 27-fold increase in participant numbers in just four years, breaking the Asian participation record. This not only reflects HYROX’s growing influence as an international event but also demonstrates the AWE’s role as a venue partner in helping the event scale up.

All exhibition halls at the AWE are on the ground floor, and their column-free and interconnectable features provide organizers with great design flexibility, allowing the venue to transform into a large indoor fitness arena within two days. The venue’s professional team has extensive experience in organizing sports events, working seamlessly with the organizer on indoor ventilation, route design, and crowd control to provide the best competition experience for athletes and spectators.

Hong Kong’s Festivalization Design Adds Charm to the Event

Originally a professional fitness competition, HYROX has evolved to incorporate festival elements. This year’s Hong Kong edition perfectly combined sports and entertainment, immersing athletes and spectators in a joyful large-scale fitness carnival, aligning with the AWE’s concept of promoting “EXPOtainment.” In addition to the thrilling competition area, the venue featured the first-ever HYROX House, offering curated dining, a bar, live music and DJ performances, and sports retail. A post-race recovery space was also set up, providing massage and spa services, creating a space for gathering, socializing, recovery, and celebration.

The festivalized design not only enriched the experience for attendees but also allowed major brands to interact with athletes and spectators through booths, thereby building an international and health-conscious brand image. Some booths featured interactive game zones with Hong Kong characteristics, such as “Dim Sum Sled Push,” “Cha Chaan Teng Plate Challenge,” and “Dragon Boat Rowing Challenge,” promoting local culture to tourists. Some overseas athletes said the competition felt more like a celebration, with many different types of booths. After sweating through exercise, everyone gathered to listen to music, eat, drink, and socialize, creating a lively atmosphere and having a great time.

Additionally, the HYROX cheering zones ran throughout the entire track and were set up next to each fitness exercise, key to creating a vibrant atmosphere. The AWE and the organizer carefully coordinated the track route, allowing spectators to watch the competition up close, almost at zero distance, while ensuring the event’s safety and smooth operation. This year’s event attracted a total of 40,000 spectators, about 20% of whom were tourists, including many families traveling from overseas. Spectators of different nationalities and ages cheered enthusiastically for the athletes, creating a heated atmosphere as the entire city immersed itself in the fitness competition craze.

HYROX Economic Circle Benefits Multiple Industry Chains Across Hong Kong

As HYROX becomes increasingly popular, a “HYROX Economic Circle” has emerged in Hong Kong over the past few years. There are 94 gyms across the city that have joined as officially recognized HYROX Training Clubs, including at least 10 chain gyms and hotel gyms. Numerous training courses are available in the market, some specifically labeled as beginner-friendly and senior-friendly, demonstrating HYROX’s rapid popularization in Hong Kong and its vast commercial potential.

HYROX’s international influence has also boosted local “sports tourism.” This year, approximately 6,000 overseas athletes and their families stayed overnight and spent money in Hong Kong, directly benefiting the tourism, hotel, and retail and catering industries. HYROX’s official regional hotel partners also launched a “Race-cation” package, including competition tickets and two nights’ accommodation, offering tailored benefits for athletes, such as energy breakfasts and sports massages, along with spectator tickets and dining discounts. This encouraged overseas and local athletes to invite more supporters to participate, stimulating spending both inside and outside the venue and extending to surrounding sightseeing tours. The hotel packages sold out quickly after launch, receiving an enthusiastic response.

HYROX is not just a sports event; it is a model event integrating sports, entertainment, tourism, and culture. As the “HYROX Economic Circle” becomes a hot topic in Hong Kong, the AWE, as a renowned venue, will continue to be a key engine driving Hong Kong’s event economy.
