BeijingApril 26, 2026 /PRNewswire/ — Nexteer has supported a leading new energy vehicle manufacturer in achieving the global launch of the first mass-produced passenger car equipped with a “full-body” all-wire-controlled chassis. The steer-by-wire system is fully supplied by Nexteer as a complete solution.
The steer-by-wire system installed in this model marks Nexteer’s first global mass-production and delivery project for steer-by-wire technology, signifying its official transition from the research and validation phase to large-scale production application. The system received the world’s first ASIL D functional safety certification from the German Accreditation Body (DAkkS) at the end of 2025. This achievement results from deep collaboration and joint development between both parties, demonstrating that the system meets top global safety standards in fault diagnosis, fault tolerance mechanisms, and safety monitoring. The core features of the system are as follows:
- Multi-layer Redundant Design: Dual controllers, dual power supplies, multiple communication links, and dual execution paths ensure multi-layer redundancy across system, hardware, and software. This enables millisecond-level backup link takeover in the event of a single fault, with no loss of steering function.
- Full-Scope Functional Safety Mechanism: Covers multi-layer monitoring and fault handling strategies for sensors, controllers, actuators, and communication links.
- Adjustable Steering Ratio: Automatically adjusts steering angle and effort based on vehicle speed and driving mode, balancing handling and comfort.
- Intelligent Haptic Feedback Technology: Delivers software-defined road feel feedback, providing a more responsive and precise driving experience adaptable to diverse driving scenarios.
- Open Interface for Autonomous Driving: As a key execution layer for advanced driver assistance systems and autonomous driving systems, it offers real-time precise control capabilities, supporting the development of intelligent transportation systems.
Steer-by-Wire: Electronic Signals Replace Mechanical Connections, Flexible Combinations Meet Diverse Needs
Steer-by-wire decouples the mechanical connection between the steering wheel and wheels, replacing traditional structures with electronic signals and actuators. It is becoming a key foundational technology for next-generation intelligent chassis and autonomous driving platforms. As a motion control technology company with over 120 years of engineering expertise, Nexteer offers flexible combinations of various haptic feedback simulators and wheel-end actuators, forming a “shelf-ready” product portfolio to fully meet the differentiated needs of various vehicle models and driving scenarios.
From Steering to Braking: Expanding Full-Stack Motion Control Capabilities
Building on its deep expertise in steering systems, Nexteer has naturally extended its technical capabilities to the braking domain. The electronic mechanical brake (EMB) product has completed full-series development and rigorous validation, and is ready for mass production. EMB, together with steer-by-wire (SbW), rear-wheel steering (RWS), and the MotionIQ™ software suite, forms Nexteer’s comprehensive and open Motion-by-Wire™ motion control product ecosystem.
By choosing Nexteer, OEMs gain not only steer-by-wire and brake-by-wire components but also a complete, mature, mass-producible, and cost-effective wire-controlled chassis motion control solution. This solution is helping shape the future of software-defined chassis, enabling OEMs to achieve faster development cycles, lower costs, and ultimately deliver safer, smarter, and more exhilarating driving experiences to end users.
During the Beijing Auto Show, we invite you to visit Nexteer’s booth at W1B03 in Hall W1 of the China International Exhibition Center (Shunyi Hall) to experience firsthand the groundbreaking innovations brought by steer-by-wire and Motion-by-Wire™ motion control technologies.
